🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Laurent of Vere
Age: 20
Canon: Captive Prince
Canon Point: Book 3 (Kings Rising), between Chapter 16 & 17

Character History: Please see the “Canon History” section of a previous app here.
The last paragraph there can be disregarded as it talks about a CRAU, but the canonpoint is functionally the same. PixieLed’s canonpoint is just at the end of the chapter after the scene resolves instead of mid-scene.

Canon Abilities: Laurent has no magical or superhuman abilities, he’s just a regular ol’ human. But for a human, he’s very above average: he's an excellent swordsman and horse-rider, intelligent and experienced in the court of public opinion, and lastly, he has great hair and loves lying.

Inventory: He would have nothing on him at this point, so just his clothes (a greek chiton), and a gold permanent wrist cuff on his left wrist.

🦋 Personality

Option 1:
1. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being?
Fun fact, Laurent has a fondness for horses. While he tends to be incredibly practical about his desires (see Q2, on wishes, for a great example), this question is far removed enough from the usual concerns that come with surviving as a Prince whose uncle the Regent wants him dead before his twenty-first birthday. So he would answer without too much cross-examining the question and his first instinct would be to be a lovely mythical horse- either a Unicorn (most commonly thought of) or Alicorn (if he's given a list to peruse; as a beautiful combination of unicorn and pegacorn, he would be endeared by the novelty of being twice the magical horse per horse.)

He’ll also throw in some sarcastic mention about how people might think he’s better suited to be a Kelpie instead. The "people" he refers to are people who don't like him, such as his enemies, or Damen in Book 1.

2. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
I think he would be torn between two options depending on at what point he was asked this and how much time he’s given to contemplate on it, with #2 winning out in the end.

1. Laurent wants his dead brother back. He has always wanted this, and in a vacuum where there are actually no caveats this is one of his dearest pipe-dream fantasies.

2. However, Laurent himself doesn’t operate in a vacuum. His brother has been dead for six years so bringing the man back today would cause a lot of complications by default, not to mention Laurent will always suspect caveats and consequences (how can he phrase “revive my brother” and be sure he’s not risking zombification, or came-back-wrong tropes, etc.? His brother coming back “wrong” in any way is probably worse than him staying dead.) On the other hand, protecting a currently living person is a lot more straightforward of a wish, and at his current canonpoint his lover Damen is in a lot of peril. Not to mention, Damen’s longterm safety and prosperity also benefits Damen’s country and Laurent’s own country indirectly, because Laurent believes Damen to be a good ruler who will be good to his people and deal fairly with Laurent’s in turn. Therefore Laurent will ultimately wish for Damen’s safety and success in regaining his kingship and defeating Laurent’s uncle.

3. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
Damianos (“Damen”) of Akielos, the guy I keep having to namedrop in this app not even about him, is a lot of things. Crown Prince of an enemy nation, killer of Laurent’s brother Auguste, renowned fighter and lover- not to mention in some kind of political-but-also-very-sexually-charged allegiance with Laurent that no one understands, but everyone is probably very entertained by. I say all of this because Laurent tends not to explain his personal thoughts and beliefs, hiding them behind what other people are saying. In speech, he will point to all of the above and more on Damen’s eligibility, resources, and the drama of it all; but in truth, Damen was the first person in a long time who made him feel supported, protected, and not alone.

At the end of Book 1, Laurent is a young man manipulated and cornered over many years by a power-hungry Regent, but Damen’s presence tips the scales and allows him to claw out his first victories- throughout Book 2 Damen physically follows Laurent on his plans, protects him from harm, guides him on military strategy, and even fights under his banner in battle. All of this, despite having suffered some horrible treatment from Laurent and having every reason to walk away. Laurent attributes his continued survival to Damen, and what better way to return the love he has received by SELF-SACRIFICE I mean, following him to another dimension. No one said self-sacrifice, that was a trick of the wind.

4. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
Adaptability. Laurent continually shocks the protagonist of his canon by surviving- perhaps not quite thrive, but survive very well- in a wide range of environments, from the royal court, to violent battlefields, to harsh mountainside wildernesses. He has an uncanny ability to pull tools and resources out of seemingly thin air to turn around a situation, which demonstrates his quick thinking as well as resourcefulness; but more fundamentally this is achieved out of a willingness to change himself to access what he needs. He will compromise on some of his personal boundaries, and he will work with enemies when he cannot find support from friends. He will use words one day and violence another, understanding that both are tools for different purposes.

He will say things that he doesn’t actually believe in, including very callous and immoral statements when he is in fact a good-hearted person who seeks to protect those weaker than him. He will fall in love with the man he once swore revenge on for killing his brother. Though that last one isn’t something he’s willing to do to survive so much as “something that happened and he hated the entire way, like a cat at the vet”, it sure did happen, and Laurent sure did pivot to his new reality as Damen’s extremely complicated situationship/future husband.

🦋 Fae Court

Including some brief explanations of my ranking and selection, hope that’s okay.
  • Autumn - I have a strong preference for this, partly because I really want the animal transformation skill for Laurent, but I do feel that things like the personality questionnaire’s Q4 (on personality traits) fits Autumn really well.

  • Winter - Tropes-wise/ vibes-wise, Laurent is often talked about in association with ice and coldness, often called “frigid”, “cold-blooded”, etc.

  • Spring - The link is kind of weak here, but Laurent was born in spring? This is my third choice mostly by elimination, as I would like a Seelie Court for Laurent and Spring feels more fitting than Summer.

Ability: Do you want your character to gain the ability of their court? (Delete the other two options.)
3) Yes, but they either have no ability of their own, or they refuse to trade theirs away; they will buy their court's ability on credit.

Note: Laurent will be unwilling to make the purchase immediately, but I hope to find a reason to convince him to do it within the first few months.
