Delicate, beautiful, and horribly poisonous, the foxglove has attracted a variety of meanings over the ages. Some have said that the foxglove is unique because of its dual meanings: "It can raise the dead and it can kill the living." Indeed, despite its lethality, the foxglove is regarded as a symbol of protection. It can cure, and it can kill. Perhaps it is because of this dichotomy of meaning that foxgloves are associated with insincerity, though they can also mean elegance and stateliness. Perhaps most pertinently, foxgloves are often given to another as a solemn wish that they may heal and recover from trauma.
